All About I.C.E. Tags

What's an I.C.E. Tag™?

The I.C.E. Tag™ is an identification tag that provides critical health and contact information for emergency personnel, who often only have minutes in which to make life-saving decisions.  The I.C.E. Tag™ is designed to fit on a child’s car seat so that it can be spotted quickly by first responders.

The I.C.E. Tag™ system includes:

A waterproof identification card (measuring 2 1/8” x 3 3/8”) made of durable
      PVC plastic with a photo and the following information:

• Name
• Date of birth
• Date of issue (the date we produce your I.C.E. Tag™)
• Allergies
• Medical conditions
• Medications
• Four emergency contacts (name/relationship/phone number)

A vinyl holder (measuring 2 7/16” x 3”)

One strip of hook & loop tape

One sticker (measuring 2" x 3 1/4") that says "Emergency information located
      on other side of car seat," which helps emergency personnel find the I.C.E. Tag™
      if they enter the other side of the vehicle

Two window clings (measuring 2" x 3") that say "In case of emergency this
      vehicle is equipped with an I.C.E. Tag™," so that emergency personnel will know
      to look in the vehicle for the I.C.E. Tag™"

Email reminders after 6 and 12 months to remind you to update the information
      and photo on your I.C.E. Tag™ so that your I.C.E. Tag™ always provides
      current information

Is there anything else like an I.C.E. Tag™?

Based on our research there’s nothing else like the ICE Tag. No other product provides an identification card that is:

• Portable, which is critical in a crisis. Emergency personnel can easily and quickly rip the ICE Tags off the child safety seats and take them with them to the hospital or to call the emergency contacts;
• Transferable, so that they can move with your child as they graduate to a larger car seat or ride with other relatives, babysitters, or car pools;
• Professionally printed and easy to read;
• Designed to fit on child safety seats, but with many other purposes;
• Designed to grow with your child as we develop ICE Tags for older youth and adults in vehicles; and
• Designed with the input of both parents and emergency personnel.

A few other groups offer stickers for child safety seats but these cannot be removed from car seats in the event of a crisis or be used in another vehicle. In addition, the emergency contact and medical information must be hand-written, which doesn’t look clean and neat, and which may make it difficult for emergency personnel to read the information.

What does “I.C.E.” stand for?

“I.C.E.” stands for “in case of emergency.”  “I.C.E.” was originally conceived by a British paramedic who was frustrated by the lack of emergency contact information for the people he cared for.  He began a campaign to encourage people to enter “I.C.E.” as a contact in their cell phones – with the name and number of an emergency contact – so that first responders would have the information when it was most critical.  The idea did not really catch on, however, until the London bombings.  Since then, the American College of Emergency Physicians has issued a press release encouraging Americans to list “I.C.E.” in their cell phones, and more and more paramedics and emergency room personnel are beginning to look for “I.C.E.” listings.

Do I.C.E. Tags™ fit on all car seats?

We have tested the I.C.E. Tags™ on most major brands of car seats, and all types of car seats (infant, convertible, and booster), to ensure a sufficient area for placement of the tags.  This includes: Alpha, Baby Trend, Britax, Cargo, Chicco, Cosco, Evenflo, Graco, Maxi-Cosi, Peg Perego, and Recaro.  With few exceptions most car seats have enough room to place an I.C.E. Tag™ where it is both visible but out of the way (of little hands and prying eyes!).  A few things we noticed during our tests:

• For infant seats you have the option of placing the I.C.E. Tag™ either on the car seat or the base. There are advantages and disadvantages to both. Placing it on the car seat ensures that the I.C.E. Tag is always with you, however, placing it on the base provides a more secure, stable placement.
• One of the Britax convertible car seats had a cloth cover that covered up the sides of the car seat, where we normally recommend placing the I.C.E. Tag™. If you have a Britax car seat we encourage you to make sure you have sufficient room for the I.C.E. Tag™ to be placed.
• On the Alpha Omega and the Alpha Sport convertible car seats we noted that it works best to place the I.C.E. Tag™ vertically, rather than horizontally, on the side of the car seat. This is a fine option that still allows the I.C.E. Tag™ to be visible and accessible.

While I.C.E. Tags™ are designed for car safety seats there are many other places to put them including:

Are I.C.E. Tags™ portable or transferable?

Yes! In fact, I.C.E. Tags™ were designed to be portable and follow your child in several ways:

• The I.C.E. Tag™ will be attached to your child’s car seat so that if you move your child’s car seat from your car to, say, the babysitter’s car, the I.C.E. Tag™ goes with your child.
• The I.C.E. Tag™ (the i.d. card and the vinyl holder) are attached to the car seat with hook & loop tape in case there is a need to temporarily transfer the Tag to another car seat (you would just need to place a small strip of hook & loop tape on the other car seat).
• The window clings are also portable and can be moved to another vehicle if your child will be riding with someone else.

The most important reason that we designed the I.C.E. Tag™ with hook & loop tape is to enable emergency personnel to remove the Tag easily and quickly from the car seat and use the information either to contact you or other loved ones, or to treat the child’s injuries.

Consider this: according to emergency personnel, if a child is injured in a car accident the paramedics will often choose to leave the child secured in his or her car seat while transporting him or her to the hospital (assuming that the child’s injuries do not prohibit this).   In this case, the I.C.E. Tag would travel with your child to the hospital and be available for emergency room personnel.
